Rugged Fashion.

It is time to retire my favorite pair of booties. The Kate Spade black suede wedge booties that I scored at Marshalls a few years back are on their last stitch and have had me on the search for my new perfect pair of fall-to-winter booties.  The style was always heavy enough to ground any outfit with lots of layers or an oversized sweater, but they had a unique element to them. Classic with a twist. I will miss them.

Finding a pair of booties with unique style that were not too funky or edgy or uncomfortable took a while, but I've done it. The problem with my old favorites was that they were suede so I knew that leather needed to be a priority for my next pair. Then I saw these:

{See by Chloe, High Heel Wallabee Booties, $340.}

They are heavy enough to ground my everyday outfits, but the narrow stacked heel and narrow toe-box prevent them from looking too clunky. I can wear them on a job, in the city, or to a farm for pumpkin picking. The lug sole gives me the support I need (I am on my feet ALL day) and the detail is perfect for traction in the snow. It also gives these booties a nice rustic edge. They match my lifestyle and I can't wait to rock them with my favorite cozy sweater and skinny jeans. Bonus: the tongue of the shoe is sewn to the sides so that rain and snow can't get in! (They are available in a gorgeous camel color too.)

Skinny jeans + oversized scarf + t-shirt + cozy sweater + booties = easy rugged fashion and my go-to outfit. Change the bag, add earrings, insert a button down shirt in lieu of the t-shirt and the style is easily elevated. What do you think?

If you like this pair but the price is too steep, these are another great option:

I love the wear-with-anything charcoal grey and the look of the textured felt.

If you aren't on the market for a new pair yourself, try breathing new life into a pair you already own with two easy steps:

1) Change the laces! If you like the ones on the See by Chloe pair above, try these:

{Dr. Martens Tricolor Shoe Laces, $3.}

Or you could try a fun shade like the teal laces on these adorable boots. (They were also a contender in my bootie search.)

{Kate Spade 'Saundra' Boots, $298.}

2) Drop your booties at the shoe cobbler to be re-soled, have the heel repaired, or just have them polished up. I do this with all of my shoes each season and they come back like new.

You can also choose to weather proof and polish your booties at home. Apple Leather Care is always great but I love Fiebring's Saddle Soap.

What is your go-to bootie?

Autumn Attack.

This rainy day reminds me that the fall season is in full effect. Yes, as usual I have been in denial that summer is behind us. But while colder temperatures and grey skies are on the horizon, I am determined to stay happy about this seasonal transition... it's not winter yet. Here are some ways to jump into Fall 2012.

3 Ways to SAVE --> Break out an item you already own that is on-trend now (this fall).

1) Pointy toe heels
The sleek look is a welcome change following many months of rounded peep-toe pumps and platform shoes. They look perfectly clean and slightly edgy with a pair of slim trousers or skinny jeans. Just make sure the leather is polished and the heels are in good condition.

2) Bordeaux lipstick
If you bought it last year and wished there was more opportunity to wear it, this is your chance. (I did. For ways to wear it, look here.) Dramatic beauty looks were everywhere on the runways for Fall/Winter 2012. Dark lipsticks are an edgy, sophisticated way of wearing red. For a more current twist, add a dab of gloss over the deep shade.

3) Peacoats
Change the buttons on your old fall peacoat to brass and rock the military trend seen on the fall runway at Altuzarra...

and Isabel Marant...

Just make sure your silhouette is sleek and modern, not too square. A pair of knee-high black leather boots are the finishing touch.

3 Ways to SPLURGE --> Add some simple updates.

1) Concealer
The season of Back to School/Back to Serious Work calls for a new one. My main goal was finding a product that did not crease after several hours or leave my under-eye area looking dry. The winner was YSL Anti-Cernes Multi- Action Concealer. It's creamy formula lasts and I look well-rested.  The square gold tube is also a pretty addition to my makeup bag. I love the light diffusing pigment and would recommend this product to all women.

{YSL Anti- Cernes Multi Action Concealer, $35.}
[Of note was the strong runner- up: Diorskin Nude Skin Perfecting Hydrating Concealer. (Say that five times fast.) But I found the tube a little too messy for makeup on the run.]

2) Fragrance
The change of seasons is always something I feel in the air. I decided to try something new this year and distract myself with a new and pleasing smell. After 5 years of the same perfume (what I still consider my signature scent), this season I've added a new one to my vanity. And the crazy thing is, so far, it's working. My mood on a gray day always picks up when I catch a whiff of it. Give it a try. Take home a sample of your favorite one and use it for a couple of days before making the investment.

3) Leather
Get yourself some black leather for an instant update. Try replacing your favorite skinny jeans with a pair of skinny leather pants or leather leggings. If you are uncomfortable with the idea of leather pants, opt for a great leather shift dress that will take you all the way through the fall and winter season. I loved these easy looks from Vince.

Elevated Basics.

If you read my post yesterday (here), you know my weekend plans. I'm finally packed! As promised, read on for more Everyday Runway tips on putting together the perfect off-duty, weekend look. Think cozy, not sloppy. The goal is to elevate your basics by incorporating three elements into your look: luxurious fabrics, understated indulgences, and artful layers.

Luxurious Fabrics
Silk, cashmere, fur, and leather are your best friends during the winter season. Choose the former for layers that will be against your skin and the latter for outer layers and/or your accessories.

--> Silk: Number one on my cozy scale for against-skin fabrics. This is usually my first layer. (See post here.)

--> Cashmere: Always amazing. The warmth without the bulk, so many beautiful cuts, and a texture you want to pet.

--> Fur: Not for everyone, but even a good faux version will get it done. Great for accessories, think hats or boots. I love the grayish white fur that lines the hood of my go-to black parka.

--> Leather: Great for accessories. A well cut pair of skinny leather pants always draws my eye. And a classic leather jacket can look amazing if the temperature allows it.

Understated Indulgences
Your off-duty, cozy look should be no frills. But that doesn't mean no accessories.

--> Go ahead and wear that beautiful belt. It will pull your whole look together.

--> Put on your favorite oversized cashmere scarf. Leave it on when you take your coat off and wrap it around twice for a glamorous undone look.

--> Wear the delicate gold chain you got from your sister or husband. Peeking out from your t-shirt or cardigan, the hint of metal will elevate and personalize your look. Not a necklace person? Put on a sparkling pair of stud earrings.

--> Grab a no fuss crossbody bag. In a sumptuous leather it is a practical mini pleasure.

--> Don't forget a warm hat and/or sunglasses!

Artful Layers
Think about proportions and cut. You want to be warm but not look bulky so limit yourself to three layers. Anything more can look messy.

--> Avoid layers that feel restricting. You are off-duty and restricting is not cozy. Make sure you are shopping for the right sizes and have considered what layer the item will be. A sweater or jacket that will be the third layer of your look should be large enough that you feel comfortable when there are two layers beneath it. A coat with too-slim sleeves will feel like a straight jacket when you try to pull it over two other layers.

--> Whenever possible, wear the right shoes. Rain boots in the rain and snow boots in the snow. If your day does not call for a shoe change, a fabulous pair of leather boots will get you through. Just be sure to treat them with a leather product meant to waterproof and seal or they won't last or more than one season. And watch the height of that heel! (For more boot ideas, look here and here.)

--> Choose an outer layer that flatters your body silhouette. Warm coats need not be shapeless! There are many styles and cuts for different body types so make sure you do your homework. (Coat ideas, look here.)

--> Remember, in the winter time sometimes your coat is your look. Opt for a bright color, unique vintage pattern, or dramatic cut that compliments your personal style.

Here are some cozy, stylish looks to inspire you.

An oversized scarf, beautiful basics, luxe handbags, and a simple silhouette.

A crossbody bag and the appropriate footwear in a pop of color...

Great cropped leather jacket...

Fur jacket, scarves,  leather boots, and shades...

Winter Weekend.

For the long weekend, my fiancé and I will be headed back to Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire with my sister and her husband. (The last time we went there was the Fourth of July, see post here.) I can't wait to get away! I am always cold so packing for this winter weekend requires planning to avoid overpacking.

For a trip like this, cozy is my benchmark. However, keep in mind that cozy should never be confused with sloppy. Elastic waistbands, clothes you borrowed from your gym bag, oversized cast-off's from your significant other, and pants that have been out of fashion for five years are not permitted. Boyfriend cut and saggy are not the same thing. One has been cut beautifully to hang in that just-right oversized way and the other resembles a shapeless sack. The key is exercising your right to comfortable clothes by elevating your look. Think slightly beyond basics with luxurious fabrics, understated indulgences, and artful layers...

Tomorrow I will share some tips on how to achieve the perfect off-duty weekend look. In the meantime, here is a peek at what I know will be in my bag...

Kat Dress.

The newest celebrity to start her own clothing line is talented tattoo artist, and former television personality, Kat Von D. As expected, the collection has a lot of black, punk influence, and a costume-y aspect to it. However, I was pleasantly surprised by many wearable and feminine pieces that would make excellent additions to any wardrobe. Moderation is the key to this collection. For an everyday runway look, choose to wear one statement piece at a time. Here are some items from the collection that I have my eye on.

This grey lace dress from the Fall 2011 Kat Von D Los Angeles Lookbook is totally on trend. The delicate sleeve ruffles and stand up collar give the Victorian era a nod, but thanks to a short hemline, the dress does not take itself too seriously.

The Elizabeth dress is also available in black. I can't help but picture a cute witch costume when I look at this. Any Charmed fans out there?

A statement coat is all you need for the winter season. I loved this double breasted one...

Until I saw this! I want the Napoleon red coat. It's a classic military style with slightly over the top, delightful details. Big buttons, chain link shoulders, a feminine nipped waist, and structured shoulders. Not to mention contrast pockets and satin trim sleeves. Is there anything that she didn't think of? I also love the color choices. "Lucifer Black" or "Aurora Red?"

This is a great clean look. I would wear the romantic Juliette blouse to work with red lipstick just the way they did here. If this is too dark for you, you could also try the blouse in white. It's very Kourtney Kardashian- esque, right?

Since the temperature drop and early snow arrival in New England this weekend, I have had a hard time putting on anything that is not super cozy and warm. This long Quill sweater would add polish to any of my off-duty looks. The feather detail is so pretty!

Here is what Kat Von D says about her collection.

"The purpose of me creating this clothing line is to simply to practice and share what Mom taught me:
Express yourself through your art- whether it's your drawings in a sketchpad, tattoos on your skin, the shade of your lipstick, or the clothes that you wear."

I like it. Now I wonder how long it will be before she creates her own perfume...

Destination Portland.

Plaid? Check. Texture? Check. Mustard and red hues? Check. Tribal inspired? Check. Cozy cape? Check. The Portland Collection by Pendleton may be all you need to look your best this fall season. (Look here if you need to read up on your fall 2011 trends.)

Looking to the past to inspire the future is one of my favorite parts of fashion. While designers such as Diane von Furstenberg, Proenza Schouler, and Isabel Marant showed gorgeous tribal patterns on the runway, this featured collection just feels more authentic. The Portland Collection by Pendleton not only embodies the current fall season, but a history as well.  The contemporary design was inspired by the archived Native American-inspired fabrics that are the foundation of the 102 year old Pendleton brand. Many of the versatile pieces are great for all ages and I found several items that would make perfect gifts.

For Dad: The ranch coat with a detachable shearling collar. Why not have the whole family contribute to stepping up his dated L.L. Bean style? Split the cost of this modern classic with your siblings. Be sure to tell him you bought American and supported the struggling economy. The end result will be Dad looking stylish while simultaneously appearing rugged and practical. Not an easy fete.

{Pendleton Portland Collection, Ranch Coat in tan, $599.}

For a new family (or couple): The ceremonial blanket. Take it to the playground, on a picnic, or to the beach! They can leave it in the car when not in use. It's convenient and portable with its leather harness and shoulder strap. What more could you ask for?

{Pendleton Portland Collection, Harding Black and Tan Robe, $248.}

{Pendleton Portland Collection, Ceremonial Blanket, $230.}

For Mom: The reversible cape. It's cowl neck, beautiful pattern (black and tan) or subtle trim (mustard and tan) make it an easy and stylish piece to throw on and wear all day. She will have it for years.

{Pendleton Portland Collection, Harding Black and Tan Cape,  $316.}

{Pendleton Portland Collection, Reversible Cape,  $297.}

Hmm, I think I need this cape too. It looks incredible with dark lipstick (you know I love it, see post here) and leather pants.

For Friend/ Sister/ Brother: The oversized scarf. Yes, it's unisex. Yes, it's also reversible. The pattern doesn't take itself too seriously so the scarf can look masculine or feminine depending on the rest of the outfit.

{Pendleton Portland Collection, Harding Scarf in Black and Tan, $96.}

{Pendleton Portland Collection, Harding Scarf in Squash, $95.}

For You: This classic carpet bag. It's perfect for your weekend and holiday trips!

{Pendleton Portland Collection, Luggage Bag, $348.}

I'm also loving these two wool dresses from the collection, but I can't find them anywhere. The surprise back cutouts are a totally thoughtful and sexy detail for wool.

So, what do you think of this collection? Would you wear it?
